After 80 years after the liberation, an unknown soldier gets a name.


A very special event took place on May 3, 2025 at the Canadian Cemetery in Holten. Under the watchful eye of many Canadian and Dutch interested parties, the official redevelopment of grave 5 row H, block 11, where a hitherto unknown soldier is buried. This year, it was clearly and officially confirmed that 26-year-old Arthur Vanance is resting in this place. Our research team played a role in reconstructing his personal story and identifying the “soldier known unto god”.
80 years after his death, a new headstone was placed at his resting place. “In war, we forget being human,” was said in one of the many speeches. Arthur Vanance is still missed as a person. This young man fought bravely for our freedom, while his home front waited for him in vain.
Each grave has a personal story. With a name and a photo, the memory stays alive for everyone. “Lest we forget”.
